Noam Shers experimental film "The Search" is a minimalist exploration of non-photorealistic rendering, using the "NPR Quake" engine modification to give it its hand-drawn look. The piece is not narrative-oriented and was Shers first public attempt at machinima. It placed third in TechTV Israel's short film contest.

Contemporary narrative machinima-makers can trace their origins to recordings such as Quake Done Quick with a Vengeance. In pieces like these players exercise their bragging rights and demonstrate their gaming prowess, and the film is pure gameplay as performance. Narrative content is absent, disregarding the minimal content embedded in the game itself, in lieu of a visceral assault on the senses. This clip, performed by various members of the Quake done Quick collective, showcases a reckless...

[NB - this video was transferred from the Machinima collection , and uses different rules to the other speeds runs in this collection, including use of emulators and multiple save states.] Another example of the pre-history of machinima - players bragging about their impressive performances to other players. This roughly 17-minute run through the NES's Metroid demonstrates the fastest path through the game. Please note : These speedthroughs were played on an emulator, using game slow-down...

Life is good, but life is short. "Mike Beery graduated from the University of Wisconsin Madison in the 80s with a degree in Fine Art. He turned to the world of advertising to make a living as an Art Director. In 1996 he began working with real-time 3D animation in his spare time, and his short films saw a great deal of success at the inaugural Machinima Film Festival Awards in 2002." - Notes from Bitfilm festival .

Cleverly adapting the Half-Life engine, Dead on Ques "Fake Science" is an avant-garde exploration of the relationship of humanity to technology: scientists develop the all-powerful television, which destroys the world, but the spirit of man lives on. Like many other machinima pieces, it was produced quickly within a week but its minimalist style won it "Best Visual Design" at 2002's Machinima Film Festival.

The ILL Clan performed Common Sense Cooking live on 16 March 2003 at the Florida Film Festival. The nine-minute piece was almost entirely improvised, building on the audiences suggestion of "film festival" as the pieces theme, and demonstrates the remarkable skill of the performers in working with a limited set of pre-rendered animations and gestures. This piece of live machinima exemplifies what makes machinima truly distinct from traditional forms of animationits sense of temporal...
